The quiet season
Frankenmuth in winter
January through April is when Frankenmuth is calm. You get shorter lines, easier parking and room to linger, and most of what makes the town fun is indoors anyway. Come midweek and you'll have even more of it to yourself.
The big winter weekend
Zehnder's Snowfest
Snow and ice sculptors take over town, with a warming tent, fireworks, a petting zoo and kids' activities. It's the busiest week of the winter, so book rooms early.
Warm things to do on a cold day
Indoor waterparks
Zehnder's Splash Village and the Bavarian Inn Lodge's waterpark both run in winter. Day passes and hotel-guest hours differ, so check each one's calendar before you go.
Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland
Open year-round, every day but a few holidays, with shorter hours from January to May. The ornament painting station runs on weekends in the slow season.
Frankenmuth Historical Museum
The town's story, from the 1845 settlers onward, at 613 S. Main St. Open year-round, with low admission and family passes.
Michigan Heroes Museum
More than 140 displays honoring Michigan's military heroes and astronauts, at 1250 S. Weiss St.
Arcades and mini golf
The Bavarian Inn Family Fun Center has indoor mini golf and an arcade, and River Place Shops has a game room and a blacksmith experience.
Tasting rooms and long lunches
St. Julian's tasting room and Frankenmuth Brewery stay open through the winter, and the chicken dinners don't take a season off. The Bar Crawl is a lot easier to walk without summer crowds.
Tips for a quiet-season visit
- Go midweek. Monday through Thursday is the calmest time all year, and many hotels price lower then.
- Stop at the Visitor Center first. It's at 635 S. Main St., with free visitor guides and restrooms.
- Check hours before you drive. Many places shorten winter hours or close for a day here and there for inventory or maintenance.
- Dress for the walk. Main Street is best on foot, even in January.
